Yoga Certificate Course Options | The Different Teacher Training Formats

To teach yoga in any style, training is most definitely required. Though you can share your practice with others in informal settings, it is important to have a foundational knowledge not only on the skills needed to guide people’s bodies safely in this practice, but also to respect the philosophical roots of yoga. Many people, once completing their first training, will continue to learn and take courses, and advance their knowledge in different traditions - old and new. In this way, there’s not just ‘one’ path to becoming a teacher, or one training that will be the only one you ever do.

To become certified, the process is a little different for every course. These are the general paths of teacher training courses, each with their own individual differences:

Month Long Immersions

Yoga Workshop.jpg

These are the most popular trainings to take around the world, and what you will find most in Bali, for people starting out on their yoga teaching journey. These are often taken first as as 200 hour Level 1 courses that span anywhere between 20 and 30 days. Within that time, the schedule is intensive, with full days of practice, theory and other experiences, with just a few days off in that time. The immersive training format is also commonly offered as 250 hours, or 300 hours, which may then be a level 2. For example, Radiantly Alive holds 200 hour level 1 month long trainings, and also 300 hour level 2, which is completed after any level 1 training (requiring students to have completed at least 200 hours of training with any school in order to join).

Year Long (or more) Experiences

These trainings are done as more of a longer, less intensive experience, where the training takes place a few times a week, or on weekends, across the span of 1 or 2 (or in some cases, more) years. People generally choose this if they would like to continue to work and maintain their life flow as they train, and are happy to let the process take more time. The pull of a month long training, over the less common longer experiences, is that immersive environments of training all-day everyday for a month, allows students to take space from their responsibilities and obligations in life, to fully be in the training experience. Generally, Yoga teacher training Bali courses are all month-long experiences.

Certified Versus Registered

When you train with one yoga school, you are then eligible to teach that particular style as a certified yoga teacher. For example, when if you were to do your Yoga teacher certification Bali with us at Radiantly Alive, you’d be a certified Radiantly Alive Vinyasa Teacher. Completing the training and graduating gives you the certificate to show that you have successfully completed a training. That’s often not all you need to teach professionally, however.

Most studios around the world require you to be a registered yoga teacher. To do this, the international registering body, Yoga Alliance, is the platform you’d need to join. With your certification, you would register online and submit the certificate in order to show you have graduated, and then you would be eligible to be a registered yoga teacher. This is the difference between being purely certified, and a professionally registered yoga teacher.

Additional Points to know

Yoga-Books.jpg
  • Most serious courses require pre- and post-requisite conditions to complete the training. These are generally things like reading textbooks on philosophy and anatomy. You may also be asked to write reports and summaries of what was read. Post training, graduates are often asked to attend a certain number of classes after the training in any or all styles, or to reflect on their experience and write papers on certain elements of the training.

  • Sometimes experience is required. Some trainings will ask for people who have been practicing for a certain amount of time - like a year or more - before they a join a training. Others - like our Vinyasa Yoga Teacher Training at Radiantly Alive - welcome all levels of yoga practitioners to the course.

  • Final ‘exams’ will also differentiate greatly depending on the yoga school offering the course. Most often they are a practical demonstration of understanding, like teaching a class or section of a class in front of the facilitators, as well as a written paper on a range of questions based on material covered in the course.

Yoga teacher certification Bali options will give you a wide range of all of these, though they are most often the one-month long intensives, since people travel to the island for an immersive period of time as they move beyond their everyday routine and dive into yoga.
